Location & Problems:

Burj Shemali camp is located 3 km east of Sour in south Lebanon and has around 23,000 registered Palestinian refugees. The camp was set up after the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict to provide tented shelter for Palestinian refugees mainly from northern Palestine.

Economical problems:

Approximately 80% of the camp’s inhabitants work in the agriculture domain. This is a seasonal Occupation that offers low daily wages. Therefore, poverty is widespread among the majority of the camp’s population. The average for the daily salary for each man is about 5 Dollars per day and this is not enough for minimum needs for living’s and for the woman is fewer.

Medical problems

The camp suffers from different diseases especially blood disease, diabetes, high pressure and heart diseases.

There is only one clinic for the whole camp with one doctor treating 300 patients daily.

The clinic suffers from deficiency of medicines
Most of the medicine does not exist in UNRWA Pharmacy. So the people are obliged to buy these medicines even though most of them can’t buy medicines because it’s very expensive.

Educational problems

The students in the camp suffer from many problems that why they fail in their classes and many of them are dropped out from the schools.
The building of the school is not suitable
There is deficiency in equipments (library, computer lab, and laboratories.
Also the social and the economical conditions of the families in the camp aren’t good.

Electricity problems:

The camp suffers from stoppage of electricity Reasons:
Old electricity network
Lines of electricity are not organized

Unemployment:

The Palestinian people can not work in most of the important jobs, although they have university degrees. So, they become disappointed and don’t continue their high studying.
High percent of the Palestinian people work in agricultural work.
